Old City is in the midst of an explosion of residential real estate development, with over 1,000 units either planned, in progress or completed in Old City and its immediate vicinity. Retail vacancy in Old City is down as businesses continue to seek relocate or open in the neighborhood.
OCD’s programs, designed to promote and continue the District’s economic vitality, include:
- Maintaining and circulating an inventory of available commercial properties
- Organizing commercial real estate broker events to promote investment and business location in Old City
- Working with a network of economic development agencies to attract new capital and business ventures
- Helping local business and property owners apply for grant funding
Over the last few years, technology and creative businesses have established an increasingly important presence in our community. OCD helps these companies find suitable real estate and actively promotes the sector’s presence here to attract more such businesses. Today, there is a critical mass of software developers, IT consultants, marketing and design agencies, computer and robotics engineers, co-working spaces and other tech/creative firms that call Old City home.
OCD has also stepped up to a more active role in the important community discussions that impact local land use, zoning and development decisions. In 2012, the City of Philadelphia completely revamped its zoning code -- a major development -- and OCD acquired designation as a "Registered Community Organization", authorized to conduct reviews of zoning applications within the district's boundaries.
