Rebecca Torpie thought she was done with the food business, she really did. The cupcake maven sold her Flying Monkey stand in RTM to Elizabeth Halen and her Flying Monkey Deuce café to Daniel Klein (Cake and the Beanstalk) under the impression that the tempestuous industry was behind her. But then a new opportunity came along, one she says she definitely couldn't pass up.
Torpie, along with owners Kirk Nelson and Lisa Ruff, hope to open Wedge & Fig, a combo cheese shop and BYO, in the Old City Cheese space (160 N. Third St.) by June's First Friday. Nelson and Ruff — he's a business guy; she's an accomplished romance novelist who also happens to have a degree in restaurant design — purchased the shop about five weeks ago, and plan on shutting it down on May 1 for renovations.
Torpie, who's signed on as chef/creative partner, says Wedge & Fig offer panini, salads and various others scratch-made eats during the day for lunchers, in addition to selling cheese retail. At night, they'll do a selection of varietal-driven cheese plates — one to pair with a big red; one to pair with a hoppy beer; one to pair with a sparkling; etc. — plus light fare, for BYOers. The pretty outdoor patio will remain; Ruff is making it a focal point.
