2024 Carl M. Buchholz Memorial Lecture with Richard Haass

New York Times bestselling author and veteran diplomat Dr. Richard Haass will join the Museum on Thursday, Sept. 19, from 6:30-7:30 p.m., as the distinguished lecturer for the sixth Carl M. Buchholz Memorial Lecture. His talk will focus on his most recent book, The Bill of Obligations: The Ten Habits of Good Citizens, which argues that the very idea of American citizenship must be revised and expanded. Through an expert blend of civics, history, and political analysis, this book illuminates how Americans can rediscover and recover the attitudes and behaviors that have contributed so much to the country’s success over the centuries.

The program will be held in the Museum’s Liberty Hall and will be broadcast live via Zoom. Following a presentation by Haass, Museum President & CEO Dr. R. Scott Stephenson will join Haass for an interview conversation about his latest work before facilitating a live Q&A with both the onsite and online audiences.

Each onsite ticket purchase includes one pre-signed copy of The Bill of Obligations: The Ten Habits of Good Citizens, available for pick up from Museum staff upon arrival to the event. Doors to Liberty Hall will open at 6 p.m. for onsite guests to enjoy refreshments at a cash bar prior to the program. Revolution Society and George Washington Council members are invited to an exclusive reception with Dr. Haass prior to the lecture at 5:30 p.m. with their ticket purchase.

The event marks the sixth Carl M. Buchholz Memorial Lecture, a series established by the generosity of the family, friends, and colleagues of the late Carl Buchholz, former vice-chairman of the Museum’s Board of Directors. The series was created to honor his public service and to explore the political thought of the American Revolution and its national relevance today.
