Alfoncie B. Austin's Basic 4 Vegelution

Alfoncie B. Austin's Basic 4 Vegetarian Snack Bar was a pioneering vegetarian and vegan venue in the Reading Terminal Market (1981-2012). Austin introduced many Philadelphians and global tourists to alternative meats and tasty, healthful plant-based food. Her story will be told by Austin's daughter Lisa Tynes at the American Vegan Center, 17 N. 2nd St., on July 16, 2023 at 2pm. In her "Vegelution" presentation, Tynes, who assisted her mother in running the stand, will discuss her own vegetarian experience and the overall chronicle of her mother’s trailblazing work. Attendees will get to sample Basic 4 foods provided by Tynes using the recipes of her mother, who passed in 2019.
