A Black Founders Musical Experience with The Jeremy Winston Chorale
The Jeremy Winston Chorale will join the Museum on Friday, May 12, to present a concert inspired by the world of our special exhibition, Black Founders: The Forten Family of Philadelphia, including the world premiere of a new choral work by composer and artistic director Jeremy Winston in honor of the exhibition. Featuring more than 20 Chorale members, the concert will celebrate the inspiring story of free Black Philadelphian James Forten and explore Philadelphia’s rich music history and its global connections. With storytelling and instrumental accompaniment, the concert will include choral works composed by Forten’s famous contemporary, Francis “Frank” Johnson, including “The Grave of a Slave,” which sets poetry by Forten’s daughter, Sarah L. Forten, to music.
Onsite tickets include day-of pre-event access to Black Founders until 6:15 p.m. The concert, which does not include an intermission, will also be livestreamed to Zoom Webinar from 6:30-8 p.m.
