Artist Statement:
As a current student at the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts, Observation and Improvisation have been combating themes in my studies. In this collection of work I am seeking to harmonize this duality. The act of looking and observing is a constant part of my existence. Painting from life has served as a meditative device that silences the world around me and allows me to focus on recording what’s directly in front of me. The act of improvisation stems from a different form of observation. I begin by observing the canvas itself, and letting my consciousness empty itself. Both practices incorporate each other though at times one overtakes the other. This is highlighted in the exhibition. Both of these systems have become integral parts of my artistic practice.

About the Artist:
Eric Wagner has been working and studying as an artist seriously for many years with a strong focus on oil and acrylic painting. He has been exhibiting work in student and group shows since 2013.

Eric’s first started appearing in shows in his hometown of Charlotte, North Carolina where he showed alongside his peers at Airy Knoll, and was included in the Mccoll Center for art Group show in 2016. In 2020, he became a student at the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts in Philadelphia. He was awarded the Lambert and Emma Wallace Cadwaller prize for Portraiture and has been included in auctions and student exhibitions throughout his time there. He is entering his final year at the Academy and looks forward to his thesis show this coming spring.
